During a break from work, I was itching for a physical project. Knowing how much my Mom’s cats enjoy her Catio, I wanted to make one for our Cat so she could enjoy the outdoors.

Lessons Learned:
- Don’t underestimate the mass of wood—something I, as an Electrical Engineer, should have considered more carefully.
- In this vein, ensure that I thought through the final installation steps for a setup like this. It took a serious deadlift movement to get the setup on the concrete supports.
- Always think through the final installation steps. Getting the setup onto the concrete supports ended up requiring a deadlift-worthy effort.
- Investing in a well-designed workspace is always worth it. My backyard is not ideal!
- Plan for even more extra time than you think you’ll need—those additional Home Depot trips are inevitable.
- And finally, even if you spend days building a custom Catio, don’t expect your cat to share your enthusiasm.
